Rosario Vázquez Lozano
Rosario Vázquez is a figurative artist who considers the body itself as an inhabitable space, a kind of individual territory that must be free and respected. She is concerned with the individual and collective female experience and being a woman in a male-dominated society. She is using traditional techniques while turning away from the classical, old-masterly depiction of women as passive and idealised figures. Her muses are not ‘objects’ to be displayed, but active and creative subjects. In her pictorial compositions she draws on literature and dance and also seek to incorporate multicultural parameters.
Rosario began her artistic training with the Mexican expressionist sculptor and painter José Barbosa, whose influence, together with the bright colours of Mexico, initially led her art to lean towards impressionism and abstraction, with an emphasis on bold colours. After deciding to emigrate to Germany with her family, her works became more figurative, with a cooler colour palette, and she returned to the Old Masters, once again focusing on portraits and nudes to explore the human condition. She has been living in Berlin since 2016.
