Hella De Santarossa’s artistic practice was shaped in the mid-1980s by her stays in Brazil and her encounters with the Afro-Brazilian religion Macumba. In 1984, with the support of the Schmidt-Rottluff Foundation, she travelled through Brazil, giving lectures in Brasília, Curitiba and Rio de Janeiro and taking part in symposia. In São Paulo, she performed ‘Al Salto di Azzurro’, and the series of images ‘Siedender Samba’ was created. During a further stay in Brazil, the series ‘Heiße Erde’ followed.
“Heiße Erde” – “Terra Quente” in Portuguese – comprises eight large-format works that capture, with expressionist traits, the essence of the Afro-Brazilian belief in gods and spirits known as Macumba. This form of belief, which includes religions such as Candomblé and Umbanda, arose from the religious syncretism of the colonial era: enslaved Africans linked their deities, the Orixás, with Catholic saints, thereby preserving their spiritual traditions despite centuries of oppression. In “Heiße Erde”, ritually dancing Afro-Brazilians are juxtaposed with ethereal beings. The artist first presented the series in 1985 in Berlin at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien, as well as in 1985 at the 18th São Paulo Biennial and in 1986 at the Karl-Ernst-Osthaus-Museum in Hagen.

Announcing Representation of Matthias Gálvez
C&B Reichert Galerie Berlin is pleased to announce its representation of Berlin-based artist Matthias Gálvez.
Matthias Gálvez lives and works in Berlin. Studied painting at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weissensee. Master student of Werner Liebmann.
The theme of the ‘figure in space’ runs like a common thread through Matthias Gálvez's work. Whether group scenes, portraits of women, female and male nudes, self-portraits or biblical and mythological themes - these often classical themes are composed in ever new constellations. Existential states and human relationships, the moods, attitudes and gestures, as well as the psychologisation of the sitters, seem familiar to us, the viewers of the pictures, in their everydayness - and yet are alien to us in their ambivalence. What makes Gálvez's work so special and extraordinary is the emotional density of his pictures - especially in his large, masterfully staged group portraits.
