Eberhard Marx

Eberhard Marx (born 1951 in Dresden) lives and works in the Rhineland, near Bonn. 
Eberhard Marx’s art is deliberately enigmatic and cannot be unambiguously deciphered. His paintings are intended to provoke a sense of bewilderment and wonder in the viewer: one recognises many things, but does not understand everything. This is precisely where their impact lies. They are not clearly explainable representations, but rather an ‘enchanted park’ in which one moves without a fixed point of reference. The mysterious element is central here and is not meant to be resolved. 
Marx’s paintings follow in the tradition of Surrealism, particularly that of René Magritte. As with him, it is not about answers, but about questions. The enigmatic nature simultaneously points to the limits of human knowledge and calls for an attitude of humility towards the unknowable.
