Aline Alagem, OUR PHONES ARE OFF THE HOOK (2023), Oil on canvas, diameter 170 cm
FRAUEN SEHEN brings together 7 female artists, 7 perspectives and 7 ways of seeing. The exhibition brings together contemporary artists from diverse backgrounds and with different working methods, who explore female perception, the body, visibility and social participation.
The title is deliberately ambiguous: women see women. Female artists observe and portray female bodies and lived realities from individual perspectives shaped by their personal histories and society.
In her sculptural works made from urban found objects, Ariane Kipp reveals traces of time, memory and society. Nicole Woischwill explores the body and female identity through experimental Polaroid collages. Myriam Mall subverts traditional female roles and portrays women as self-assured subjects. Ina Djurković combines vulnerability with strength and resistance. Eva Gjaltema uses photographic archives to examine questions of identity and self-perception. Aline Alagem develops visual worlds centred on sensuality, desire and female autonomy. Johanna Keimeyer expands the concept of the image into a sensory-spatial experience and turns her gaze towards inner realities.
All the artists live in Berlin, though their life stories extend beyond the city. These diverse experiences shape their ways of seeing and make it clear: there is no single ‘female gaze’ – there are many.
FRAUEN SEHEN understands visibility as an artistic and social practice and invites viewers to question their own gaze: Who is looking? Who is being looked at? Who determines what becomes visible?
